A fever is a valuable defense mechanism that indicates the body’s immune system is stimulated by an infection or other illness.
When taken by mouth, a child’s normal body temperature is usually between 96.8 to 99.4 degrees.
Fevers of 101 to 103 degrees (38.4 to 39.5 Celsius) are generally not serious and can be treated at home.
Fevers of 104 (40 Celsius) or higher that don’t come down to 101 or 102 (38.3 to 38.9 Celsius) with the treatment measures below.
Fever is a sign of over-stressed or over-active nervous system. Thus, first the child needs to be put in calm, peaceful and restful environment.
Make sure that your child receives plenty of fluids, preferably liquids that have nutritional value.
Kids Oxylent in small doses for the electrolytes and vitamins is good.
During illness metabolism is working hard. That’s why when fever is high rich bone broth cooked with a few vegetables should be the main food served since it is easy to digest. Fasting and drinking plenty of fluids is the best approach. This way we help the body to use its energy to support the immune system rather than the digestive system.
Vitamin A
Fever and inflammatory process rapidly uses up vitamin A. Depletion of vitamin A in children with high fevers can result in seizures.
Once the child feels little better cooked vegetables or cooked brown rice with butter is a good source of vitamin A.
Sources of vitamin A:
Cod liver oil (1/2 tsp)
Liver
Egg yolks
Butter
Cooked vegetables: sweet potato, butternut squash, kale, carrot, spinach
Fruit: mango, cantaloupe, grapefruit, watermelon, papaya, apricot, tangerine
If supplementing vitamin A emulsion form is recommended because it enters the system more quickly (adults 10,000 IU, children over 2 yrs old 1,000-5,000 IU daily)
Best sources of bioavailable vitamin A are cod liver oil, liver, butter and eggs from pastured animals. Plant foods contain beta-carotene, not vitamin A. Beta-carotene even though has a lot of health benefits is not a true vitamin A. It needs additional vitamins and enzymes in addition to healthy digestive tract to convert to bioavailable Vitamin A (Source: “There is no vitamin A in plant foods” by Sandrine Perez)

Supplements containing iron or zinc should not be taken during fever:
“When infection is present, the body attempts to “hide” iron in the tissues in an attempt to keep the infecting organism from using it for nourishment. Taking a supplement containing iron therefore causes undue strain on a body that is fighting an infection. Zinc is not properly absorbed while a fever is present.” (Source: “Prescription for Nutritional Healing”)
