Homemade remineralization toothpaste

Why make your own toothpaste?

You are in control of ingredients and use only those that help successfully clean and reminalize your teeth.

You avoid commercial toothpastes that often include harmful ingredients such as glycerin, propylene glycol, titanium dioxide, artificial colors and flavors and fluoride.

Ingredients to consider for DIY toothpaste:

  • Calcium carbonate powder – 3 tablespoons
  • Calcium & magnesium powder – 1 tablespoons
  • Baking soda – 1 tablespoons
  • Bentonite clay – 1 tablespoons
  • Xylitol powder – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Coconut oil – 2 tablespoons softened
  • Distilled water – 2 tablespoons
  • Trace minerals – 10 drops
  • Clove and Peppermint essential oils – about 10 drops

Directions:

Mix all the ingredients together to the consistency you like.

I put powders first in a bowl, then add softened coconut oil and distilled water. Then add the essential oils and trace minerals. Mix with a wooden spoon.

Notes:

  • You can play with the ingredients and their amounts.
  • Add more calcium, bentonite clay or baking soda to make the paste more firm.
  • Firmness of the toothpaste will fluctuate when using coconut oil depending on temperature you have at home. In winter time I tend to use more bentonite clay instead of coconut oil since it makes my toothpaste too hard.

Benefits of the ingredients:

Calcium carbonate – supports healthy enamel

Baking soda – alkaline; helps to neutralize excess acid in the mouth, mildly abrasive

Coconut oil – attacks harmful bacteria in the mouth; reduces plaque buildup, prevents tooth decay and fights gum disease; also, helps to bind the ingredients together

Trace minerals – provides important bio-available minerals to help strengthen your teeth

Bentonite clay – absorbs toxins, heavy metals and impurities; alkaline; contains trace minerals and calcium that support reminalization of teeth; mildly abrasive

Xylitol – sugar alcohol; supports re-minalizaton; adds a little sweetness to the toothpaste

Clove essential oil – antibacterial

Peppermint essential oil – adds flavor

Cinnamon essential oil – anti-inflammatory
